Harrison Gives Back
In December 2013, Harrison participated in the construction and placement of a new basketball court for Harmony Family Center at Camp Montvale in Blount County, TN. Harmony’s mission is to serve children, families, and communities through counseling, education, and adoption. Their work with families often begins at placement and continues throughout the adoption. Harmony is in the process of adapting the former YMCA Camp Montvale for use as the Harmony Family Center at Montvale. Located eight miles from Maryville, TN, Montvale is nestled at the foot of Chilhowie Mountain, adjoining the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Each year Harmony serves over 1,000 children and youth in Tennessee and last year they found homes for over 100 youth who had been in foster homes for extended periods.
Harrison was approached by Blount Excavating to help participate. The project required 70 cubic yards of concrete, many hours/days of preparation, and the installation of two brand new Goalrilla basketball goals. The Harrison crew, headed by Roger Burchfield, consisted of Rick Burchfield, Lonzo Gordon, Mark Fillmore, Jarvis Pinkleton, Jimmy Pinkleton, Juan Guiterez, Roger Gribble, Jerry Eaton, Samuel Lopez, Chris Fernandez, and Jose Rodriguez. They worked several days in preparation of the site and placement of the concrete.
Pam Wolf, the director of Harmony, stated that “as a non-profit we are accustomed to hand-me-downs and seconds – so to have a first-class job with state of the art goals is something very, very special….It means the world to all of us at Harmony!” A ceremony was conducted to dedicate the court and included several members of the Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team. The court will provide many years of service for the Harmony Family Center as they continue to serve the many families and children in East Tennessee. If you are interested in finding out more about the Harmony Family Center or wish to contribute, please visit their website at www.harmonyfamilycenter.org.
Harrison Ready Mix Receives Award from Tennessee Concrete Association
The Tennessee Concrete Association (TCA) hosts their annual winter meetings in Nashville every February. As part of the convention each year, awards are presented in several different categories. Harrison won the award for Best Specialty Concrete. Accepting on Harrison’s behalf were Doug Brown (Vice President), Don Childress (QC Manager), and Stan Walls (Sales Manager).
Harrison was contacted by the Environmental Management Program Office (EMPO) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) about a product that could be utilized for underground duct abandonment. The duct, approximately 1,400 feet in length with a volume of around 22,500 cubic feet, needed to be filled and permanently closed. After several discussions about Controlled Low Strength Material (CLSM) to be used, it appeared there were concerns over the unit weight needed for a particular underground section. Harrison met with numerous officials and project managers to further understand their needs, only to find that a section of underground duct crossed a small creek, and they would not accept any unit weight over 99 pounds per cubic foot.
After investigating standard unit weights for CLSM, Harrison contacted their admixture supplier, BASF, to aid in designing the material. BASF suggested using Rheocell 30 to “foam” a slurry mix to reduce the unit weight to the requested specifications. Through many trial batches conducted by Harrison we were able to produce a unit weight of less than 50 pounds per cubic foot.
M&W Drilling started with a Low Slump CLSM to block small passages in the duct after which the day came to pump the Low Density Cellular Fill. Four different pours were conducted consisting of 15 yards per pour to completely fill the duct that crossed over the creek. The project ended successfully. ORNL was very pleased with Harrison’s ability to provide a solution to the EMPO’s problem with underground abandonment and low unit weight concerns. We feel that we are deserving of the specialty concrete award due to innovation used and the success of this project.
